ARTISTS STATEMENT

I grew up in a household filled with arts and crafts.  All the women painted, or stitched, or did various crafts. (Interestingly, my Grandfather was the only man in the family to show artistic abilities)  To this day I still do many creative things, including ceramics and monotypes, and, of course, painting.  I just love creating on many levels and in many mediums.  So too does my subject matter vary over time from realism to abstract, figures to landscapes.  At present I am exploring and enjoying abstraction and design.

In my painting, I am using the rich and varied possibilities of water media - acrylic, watercolor, gouache, etc.  Acrylics in particular are fascinating in their ability to go from thick, viscous, textural applications to thin, transparent watercolor-like washes, and everything in between.  And the monotypes hold their own fascination for me as their surprises and gifts come from transferring a painting on a printing plate, through as printing press, onto paper.  You never know exactly what you will get, but sometimes there are wonderful surprises.  Things you never could get by planning.

So, as George Rickey would say, “As for what I’m making now, perhaps it’s art; but if it isn’t, at least it’s something else equally interesting to me.”
